A curious weight of M. Nonius
Lot 2037
Circa 4th-6th centuries. Weight of 2 Nomismata (Bronze, 18x15 mm, 8.40 g). + M NONIVS / LЄCLЄMNS / Θ SYPPⲰN. Rev. Blank. Bendall -. CPAI -. MAH -. Pondera -. Extremely fine.

The meaning of the legend on this odd piece unfortunately eludes this cataloguer: it apparently starts with the Latin name M. Nonius, but what follows is a mystery. Perhaps a somewhat blundered cognomen is hidden in the second line, whereas the third line may a record a blundered geographical epithet or a blundered version of σύρροπος ('standardized'). As such, it is certainly a curious piece and worthy of further research
